It was about three weeks into quarantine that I got myself a Serato DJ Controller. If it’s going to be no festivals, no parties and staying home all the time – then at least there should be music and pullups in my basement. I hadn’t really touched the wheels of music for quite some time, like for 10 years: My role on the soundsystem is MCing, and with some of the world’s best selectors on my team, there is no need for me to juggle myself. But yeah, Corona. So, I set up the sound and started to build my crates: of course, I’m not gonna play the same selections that we play at parties and I’m not gonna copy my peers‘ crates. No, this is my passion, I need to find my own tunes.

So, I started to select my own tunes: dubs, 45s, mp3, riddims, hits – every selector knows how long it takes to get the right tunes in the right order. In my imagination, I’m preparing for an all-night dance that starts at sunset with classics and singers and goes on to the early night, where reggae and easy dancehall come in down to the prime time where all the hits are dropped and ends up with an energetic early mornin’. This mix is an essence of the “classics and singers”-part.

“Bluefields Beach” takes you back to where it all began: Westmoreland, Jamaica around 2001 – I used to live in a small two-room wooden house in Retirement Road, about 1 mile from the beach. During the week, the beach was a sleepy place, with only Eddy passing by occasionally, offering you a deep-frozen Pepsi from his pushcart-cooler. The kids from the road would show me how to fish between the rocks at the upper end of the beach, pick mangos from the tree or even pick the pockets of people who went swimming and left their clothes too unattended. But besides such little incidents, one could always enjoy the calm tranquility of this humble paradise. People would even tell you to go swimming before sunrise to get rid of a cold.
But on sunday, the beach came to life. Big soundsystems blasting big tunes, the smell of jerk chicken and weed in the air, you drink soda or liquor and watch the bikes and bikinis – the beach was the place to be.
